This workshop shows how to make this upcycled box using the Cosmic Shimmer metallic lustre paints.
The Sue Wilson special collection arbour gate is used as a focal point for the box lid which sits on the Sue Wilson shadow box collection stitched lattice frame die panels.
Cosmic Shimmer pearl PVA glue dots are added to the arbour gate and the Creative Expression double white pearls are added around the edge of the box lid.

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1. This workshop shows you how to make the `You are a treasured friend` box by upcycling a box using the yummy Cosmic Shimmer metallic lustre paints. For the project you`ll need Sue Wilson shadow box collection stitched lattice frame dies, the Sue Wilson special collection arbour gate, the New Zealand Collection tag die & the frames & tags collection ~ Lauren die. Also needed are the Creative Expressions amazing sentiments stamps and the Cosmic Shimmer metallic Sahara mist lustre paint, then the Craft Consortium always & forever peach resin flowers are used to finish the project off perfectly.
Step 2. This workshop can be adapted to whatever size box you have as so many of the techniques will transfer to different shape items or why not make your own box and cover in the same method.
Take the used box and as you can see from above the box has an acetate cut out in the lid so take a piece of grey card and lay it on the box lid. Mark in pencil where the card needs to be trimmed off. I have left a 3 to 4mm space all around the edge of the box so that a landscape piece of A4 card could be used and it also means I can get an inner piece of card out of the same sheet of card.
Step 3. Cut 4 pieces of card, 2 for the top and bottom and 2 for the inner lid and base of the box. Place some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue around the edges and in the middle of the grey card. Add the card on the top of the box and also one on the inside of the box. Press down firmly to ensure the card sticks to the edges of the box.
Step 4. Repeat the process on the base of the box and until all 4 areas are covered. This will also help make the box a very sturdy one.
Step 5. Paint a thin layer of the Cosmic Shimmer white gesso around the sides and then leave to dry before painting the inside of the box.
Step 6. I being impatient!!! So I turned the boxes over and placed them on 2 thick embossing crystal pots and then painted the top and bottom of the boxes. Then I went back and painted the insides once these areas were dry.
Step 7. Place some of the Cosmic Shimmer metallic Sahara mist lustre paint on a craft mat and then using a small piece of cut`n`dry foam swipe the paint over the dried gesso / box.
Step 8. I then stippled the cut`n`dry foam with the Cosmic Shimmer metallic Sahara mist lustre paint on it to achieve a rough texture to the lid of the box.
Step 9. Continue to paint the box by either using a paint brush to get into the sharp corners of the box or use the cut`n`dry foam to dab the paint onto the box. This Cosmic Shimmer metallic Sahara mist lustre paint is a lovely delicate colour which works will for this project and gives a nice glow to the end result.
Step 10. Place the 2nd and 3rd from largest Sue Wilson shadow box collection stitched lattice frame dies onto a piece of the Foundations coconut card and secure in place with some low tack tape.
Step 11. Run the prepared dies and also the Sue Wilson special collection arbour gate on some more of the coconut card through the Grand Calibur machine to cut and then emboss the dies.
Step 12. Cut up the centre of JUST the arbour gate and not the top arch, being careful as you go as the centre line is very thin but it`s easily down freehand with a sharp pair of scissors.
Step 13. Here the piece of cut`n`dry foam has just been swiped across the smaller of the 2 stitched frames to add some extra colour to the card. There was enough paint still on the foam so no need to add anymore paint to the foam unless really needed.
Step 14. Attach foam pads to the reverse of the coconut card before adding some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue on top of the foam pads. This will just give you some extra time when placing the card onto the box and it will allow you to move the piece before it holds for a firm finish. Add the panel to the top end of the box leaving a small border all around the 3 sides of the box and with a larger gap at the bottom where the sentiment and ribbon will be placed later on.
Step 15. Repeat the same foam pads with the lustre stitched panel and this will give you extra height and dimension with the panel.
Step 16. Take the arbour gate you have already cut and lay a ruler along the line where the gate would open and ease the gate / card upwards.
Step 17. Place dots of the Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue onto the reverse more solid areas of the gate…..
Step 18. … before sticking the arbour gate directly onto the lustre stitched panel. Hover the piece over the card before sticking the piece is place as it will save glue being spread from underneath.
Step 19. Stamp and emboss the `You are a treasured friend` sentiment from the Creative Expressions everyday sentiment clear stamp set using some black archival ink pad if you are quick with adding the embossing powder afterwards or use the Perfect Medium ink for more time. Then place the Cosmic Shimmer bright gold embossing powder over the ink before heat setting the powder.
Step 20. Use the frames & tags collection ~ Lauren die to cut out the sentiment. Also cut and emboss the New Zealand Collection tag die in coconut card to go underneath the sentiment die cut piece.
Step 21. Place the prepared sentiment / die cut pieces on the bottom of the box to see where the sentiment will be placed. Cut a slot either side of the sentiment at the side of the box and just next to the board covered panels so it hides the cut lines.
Step 22. Cut a length of the Creative Expressions ruffle ribbon and poke it through the slot from inside the box. Repeat this on the other slot.
Step 23. Pull the ribbon through to leave a nice flat piece inside the lid of the box.
Step 24. Secure the end of the ribbon in the centre front of the box with either some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue or some strong tape as used here. Do the same on the other end of the ribbon making sure that any excess ribbon is trimmed away so it isn`t to bulky when the sentiment is added later on.
Step 25. Still !!!! using the lustre paint that remains on the cut`n`dry piece of foam, add the paint on the edges of the sentiment die cut and the underneath tag too.
Step 26. Stick the prepared tag onto the ribbon using some 3d glue to help anchor the depth of the ribbon underneath.
Step 27. Place a Craft Consortium Always & Forever peach resin flower either side of the sentiment to add detail to the finished sentiment panel.
Step 28. Also add a resin flower to each corner of the box.
Step 29. Use the Creative Expressions pearl double white strip around the middle of the lid for extra detail.
Step 30. To take the project further, some Cosmic Shimmer pearl PVA glue is added in dots on the small circle areas of the arbour gate to make faux pearls.
Step 31. Here is the completed project, this box started off being a wonderful chocolate box gift and rather than throwing it away it`s been made into a lovely keepsake that will be treasured.
Step 32. The shimmer from the paints gives a special feel to the box and works well with the gesso paint underneath.
Step 33. The stitched die cuts shapes help build the design underneath the arbour gate. I love the detail of the die allowing a faux pearls to be added with ease.
