Step by Step Instructions
Step 1. This workshop will show you how to make this dimensional Christmas card by just using 2 sheets of the designer 8” x 8” paper, 2 sheets of gold card and a sheet of the red card to layer the panel onto. For the project you`ll need the Sue Wilson noble double pierced rectangle dies and the Creative Expressions ~ John Lockwood 12 Days of Christmas premium paper collection, 2 sheets of vintage gold card and a sheet of the foundations scarlet card. Also used are the Cosmic Shimmer scarlet woman & chic colour cloud blending ink which have been applied with a Creative Expressions smoothies.
Step 2. Remove one of the Creative Expressions ~ John Lockwood 12 Days of Christmas premium paper collection sheets with all 12 days arranged around the centre partridge in a pear tree topper. Trim 2mms off the top edge of the paper so it mirrors the two other side edges. This will help to size the paper onto a mat of card and then fit onto an A4 size card correctly.
Step 3. Repeat the process on the other side edge. Now all the 4 edges will have the same width border around the design.
Step 4. To add dimension to the card but by only using 2 sheets of the paper then cut some of the required elements from the bottom layer as long as the cut line does not go outside the square edge of the small panels. Here the goose is neatly removed with a small pair of decoupage snips.
Step 5. Continue using the same technique and remove other images from the sheet of paper staying within the square shape.
Step 6. Use some decoupage snips or a small pair of scissors to go around the outline of the pieces. Often it`s easier to leave off the feet of the birds as these will be seen on the topper below.
Step 7. Add some of the glossy accents around the outside of the design before filling the inner section up. This outer line acts as a barrier and will give to a lovely finish to the piece.
Step 8. Make sure you move the pieces slightly so you know that there is no glue on the edges. They could stick to the paper underneath when you try to remove them once the glossy accents is dry later on. Just set the pieces a side and allow them to dry naturally.
Step 9. Cut the centre partridge in a pear tree panel using the inner frame line from the 2nd sheet of Christmas paper. Edge the piece using some of the Cosmic Shimmer scarlet women colour cloud blending ink on a Creative Expressions smoothie.
Step 10. Use some of the glossy accents on the pears on the tree as this will add a dimension to the topper.
Step 11. Cut all of the small toppers out which have had the underneath sections removed as these will cover the holes up.
Step 12. Add some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue to the large paper panel and place it onto a piece of the Foundations scarlet red card.
Step 13. Make sure you place the paper so it leaves a 3mm border on the bottom and left hand side of the card. Then you will just need to trim away the right hand side and top edge at 3mm from the edge of the paper. This technique makes it nice an easy to achieve a straight edge and by removing the thin piece of paper earlier means the paper fits nicely on the piece of A4 card.
Step 14. Add some foam tape to the reverse of each of the small toppers. Use the Cosmic Shimmer chic moss and or scarlet women colour cloud ink on a smoothie to edge the small panels. You can also just add one colour throughout the project it`s up to you.
Step 15. Select the piece which has had the main focus decoupaged.
Step 16. and then continue to add the foam back panels over the relevant panels over the backing paper.
Step 17. Add a line of foam tape over the centre partridge in a pear tree image before adding the prepared panel over the top.
Step 18. Now you will have a lovely raised paper panel ready for the decoupaged pieces to be added when they are dry later on.
Step 19. To make the base card I am using the Sue Wilson noble double pierced rectangle dies. Leave a gap of 1½” from the left hand side of a piece of the gold vintage card. Select the largest die and place it in a portrait position just past the 1½” mark. Use some low tack tape to secure the die in place.
Step 20. Place the card panel onto the card to make sure the pierced design will be seen around the edge of the design ~ in this case it fits perfectly.
Step 21. Use the base plate and then the die attached to the card and it facing upwards into the tan mat and then the pink embossing plate. Run the piece through the Grand Calibur to just emboss the piece.
DO NOT cut the die piece.
Step 22. Now the card has the first part of the surrounding embossed with a pierced edge so lay the panel back in place.
Step 23. Move the die across so it`s positioned down the right hand side of the card. And secure in place using some more of the low tack tape.
Step 24. Lift the top panel off to reveal the die and then run this through the die cutting machine using the same embossing mats as before. Make sure it`s just embossed and NOT cut.
Step 25. Now you will have a cross over on the double pierced rectangle shape but the embossed line going upwards will be covered by the topper and you`ll be left with a pierced edge with a much larger area than the die.
Step 26. Place the topper back on the card and with the pierced area.
Step 27. Mark the edge of the card and then place a 2nd sheet of gold card so it lays exactly under the top layer of card. Now trim away the excess gold card from the right hand side of the card.
Step 28. Cut a `My true love gave to me … ` sentiment from the centre line on one of the paper pad sheets as they work perfectly to fit along the side edge of the card. Add the sentiment onto an off cut of the Foundations scarlet women card leaving a small 3mm border all around the edge of the sentiment.
Step 29. Add the side score line at 1½” in from the left hand side of the card and on the front of the card.
Step 30. Turn the card over and then run an embossed line all around all the edge of the small section. This will give some detail to the finished look of the card.
Step 31. Turn the card over and crease the card back at the 1½”score line. Add some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue or some double sided tape to the reverse of this panel and stick the card on the base card.
Step 32. The base card now has a hinged effect opening to the card which adds a nice detail to the card as well as joining to pieces of A4 card together to make a larger card.
Step 33. Add some foam tape to the base inner pierced area making sure you leave enough gap around the outside of the card so the tape isn`t seen.
Step 34. Add the `My true love gave to me … ` sentiment onto the side bar using foam tape again for added dimension.
Step 35. Add the main panel onto the foam tape.
Step 36. Make a shabby chic bow by wrapping the red vintage ribbon loosely around your hand 3 times and leaving the ends of the ribbon long. Trim the ends to the required length and also cut 1 of the bow loops through the loop end to make 2 more ends each side of the bow. Add this to the corner of the centre topper so the numbers of the panels can still be seen. Also add a small green bow and a gold Creative Expressions dazzler to cover the knots of the bow and to finish the ribbons off nicely.
Step 37. Add some 3d glue / gel to the topper or to the back of the glossy accents piece. I prefer to add the glue directly to the topper to avoid to much handling of the glossy accents piece.
Step 38. Place the glossy accents pieces onto the glue to finish of the design perfectly. These elements just add and lift the design up but they have not cost you any more money as they would have been covered over by the toppers. Well just a small amount of glossy accents but that`s all.
Step 39. Here is a close up of the raised decoupaged glossy piece.
