Spellbinders Expandable Butterfly Magic / Creative Expressions Shoe Card

This workshop shows how to create a decorative filigree background with a micro bead panel behind the butterfly magic design. The butterflies in the shoe design follow through the theme.

Here is a close up of the stamped shoe. The shoe has been coloured using the Cosmic Shimmer drawing inks.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Select the stamp required for the project; in this case the shoe with butterflies has been chosen to allow the theme to run though from the Spellbinder expandable butterfly magic die. A pretty floral 12” square paper will be used to help show the design through the die cut areas.

1 1

2 Place the wax paper in between the card & the die to help when removing the die once cut. This is optional for this project as you will see in the next few steps as it has been done without the wax paper and design cut first time.

2 2

3 So here is the alternative of just cutting the die without the wax paper. Be sure to tape the die in place with some low tack tape to ensure the die doesn`t move once placed through the Grand Calibur machine. Allow enough space on the card to move the die sideward once cut.

3 3

4 Once the piece has been cut then move the die along and secure the die in place to expand the design further.  Use the shape of the petals to guide you where to place the die. Now cut through the GC machine.

4 4

5 Trim around the outer edge of each side to get a quick panel. Alternatively leave a small border all around the design and go in with a craft knife to remove all the pieces that remain on the border edge.

5 5

6 Trim the backing paper so there is a 1cm border left all around the butterfly piece.

6 6

7 This step shows how to make use of the odd mistakes that can so often happen. Here the die was moved on a 2nd pass making it not useable, so as not to waste the card the backing paper is placed over the die cut piece.

7 7

8 Then trim leaving a 3mm border around the edge of the backing paper. This die cut area will be masked underneath the backing paper and not seen once it placed onto a base card.

9 Trim a piece of the self adhesive film making sure there is a 1cm border left around the backing paper. This will just add a look of dimension once the micro beads are added.

9 9

10 Remove the backing on the film & with the panel angled over a shallow container then tip the jar of micro beads over the paper. Now press the beads into the adhesive beads to make sure the beads are securely on the film.

10 10

11 Apply some Cosmic Shimmer glue to the reverse of the butterfly magic panel and stick the piece to the micro beads. The glue is strong but it is worth placing the piece under a book for 5 – 10 minutes to allow the glue to set on the thin pieces of the cut panel.

11 11

12 Take a piece of coconut card & stamp the butterfly shoe onto the card using some archival black ink.

12 12

13 Be quick & sprinkle the clear Cosmic Shimmer clear embossing powder over the ink.

13 13

14 Heat set the embossing powder using a heat tool. Using the black ink gives a wonderful sharp look to the shoe & will act as a barrier to the Cosmic Shimmer drawing inks.

14 14

15 Select some soft pinks & green Cosmic Shimmer drawing inks. Shake the inks up before using to allow the mica to be dispersed into the rest of the liquid. Build layers of the colours to add tones to the piece.

15 15

16 Once the piece is finished and dry then go ahead and cut around the outer edge leaving a small white edge. This means the fine areas don`t have to be cut out as this often weakens the card.

16 16

17 Wrap a green ribbon around the butterfly prepared piece & mount onto a folded base card. Cut a vintage banner label out of the backing paper & distress the edges with some peeled paint ink. Then cut a small banner in a soft pink card & mat them onto the card using foam tape for added dimension. Tint the wooden Studio 490 roses using a Victorian velvet distress marker pen.

17 17

18  Place the wooden rose embellishment onto the knot of the bow to bring the colours of the project out.

Stamp a `Shoes & Friends` sentiment onto an off cut of the backing paper & mount onto a piece of pink card before adding to the bottom of the card.

18 18

19 Here is the completed card. Perfect for a friend `s birthday who loves shoes or maybe for an invite for a shopping day. Sometimes it`s just nice to receive a `just because` card.

20 Here is a close up of the shoe with the soft Cosmic Shimmer colours that tone throughout the card.
